Overall Eley Hawk Winter Series DTL Champion

Darren Newton
Spring has arrived and what a glorious day it is as I write this report, it was a different story at 9-30am this morning 22nd March 2009 with the clouds covering the sun and the wind swirling dust clouds around the car park at the A6 Clay Target Centre. After a long, cold winter it had finally arrived! NO not Spring but the day of reckoning, for the A6 CTC and Eley Hawk DTL Winter Series 6th and final event.
You only need two scores from six events to get into the A6 CTC and Eley Hawk DTL Winter Series shoot off for a chance to win a TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch.
AA Class, Darren Newton set a blistering pace with a 297 on the 1st event followed by 296 on the 2nd - John Twigg was keeping up with a 296 and a 292 just a couple of points behind. Nigel Chapman posted a 295 and 297 at event 2 and 3 so it was all to play for but Darren kept his head down and the first scores he set were enough to see him to the shoot off.

Matt Jubb posted 291 and 289 at event 1 and 2 for A Class, bearing in mind Matt only started shooting eight months ago this was a very high standard to set. Event 4 and 5 took John Blackburn to the top of the board with a very lucky even though I say so myself 297 followed by a 291 only managing to improve it by 1 point at event 6
1st J BLACKBURN 198/589
2nd JA WILLIAMSON 197/586

It was all to play for - neither of them improved at event 6, forcing a shoot off for the class winner and J Holden emerged victorious in the shoot off with a 24/70 to 20/57 for Joe
1st J HOLDEN 190/564

So, the time had arrived for the A6 CTC and Eley Hawk DTL Winter Series shoot off for a TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch.
A handicap system was in operation for the shoot off:-
AA Class Darren Newton 1 handicap point
A Class JA Williamson 2 handicap points
B Class Graham Beal 3 handicap points
C Class J Holden 4 handicap points
(As J Blackburn was the co-owner of the A6 he stepped down from shoot off for the watch)
It began, J Holden on peg 5 was the first to drop a point - don't worry the handicap system gave him four points in hand. Eight targets in Holden dropped another point, only 2 points in hand left... Ninth bird in Darren drops a point that was all his handicap points used up - can he keep it together. Thirteenth Target J Williamson drops a full target - with only 2 handicap points that puts him out of it. Bang, Bang - Lost J Holden drops a full target he's out. Twentieth target - Bang, Bang - Lost Graham Beal loses his handicap points - that puts him neck and neck with Darren. Twenty Fifth Target Darren cleans it - Graham all you need to do is shoot this to force a second round shoot off Bang, Bang Second the referee calls - its all over.
Darren Newton shot 25/74 and with 1 handicap point he finished on 25/75
John Williamson shot 23/68 and with 2 handicap points finished on 23/70
Graham Beal shot 24/71 and with 3 handicap points finished on 24/74
J Holden shot 24/69 and with 4 handicap points finished on 24/73
Darren Newton won the shoot off with a score of 25/74+ 1 total 25/75
