Overall Eley Hawk Winter Series Champion - John Stafford
Winner of the shoot off for the TAG Watch - Steve Fiddler
It has been a long, cold winter this year, but we have been kept warm in our hearts knowing that we only needed two scores from six to be the class winner and gain that coveted spot in the A6 Eley Hawk ABT Winter Series shoot off. A share of 5000 Eley cartridges is up for grabs and a chance to win a TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch.
For all those who braved the elements over the last 6 ABT shoots we eventually came to the day of reckoning. With only 2 scores to count it was all to play for right up to the last event.
A Class, has been a fiercely fought battle between the two titans that are, Ian Peel and John Stafford - Ian set a commanding lead with a 95 followed by a 97 after the first two events. John Stafford managed to post two 94's giving Ian a lead of three targets. Wait, it's not over yet - John pulled it together at event four posting a 98 and a 99 at event six - raising the bar to a level that Ian was unable to conquer.
Jack Thompson won the first B Class event with 94 - Darren Newton was close on his heels with a 93 and Ken Grime 91. Jack was having none of it and held on with grit and determination the like of which we have not seen in these parts for many a year well done Jack.
Steve Fiddler posted two 92's setting his stall out early for C Class with John Blackburn and K Boken his nearest rivals some 14 targets behind. It was not until event four and five when Karl Prince came home with two 91's just two targets behind him. It was all down to event six Blackburn had managed a very credible 93 at event five to bring him within touching distance, but it was not to be for him as he crashed out. Karl finished with another 91 it was over, the bar had been set very high and nobody could beat Steve so he secured his place in the shoot off.
Dan Jubb - Well what can we say here, this man has come from nowhere. Eight months ago he started having lessons on Saturday morning with his brother Matt. They have both taken to shooting like a duck to water. Never have I seen such determination and enthusiasm for the sport as I have seen in the Jubb brothers. If practising at a sport makes you better, then this pair has shown that that is true. After only one month of shooting ABT Dan posted an 83 at event one followed by 89 at event two, improving with a 93 at event four and finishing with a 90 at event six. Dan well and truly earned his place in the shoot off.
So, the time had arrived for the A6 Eley Hawk ABT Winter Series shoot off for a TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch.
A handicap system was in operation for the shoot off:-
A Class John Stafford 1 handicap point
B Class Jack Thompson 2 handicap points
C Class Steve Fiddler 3 handicap points
D Class Dan Jubb 4 handicap points
It began, John Stafford on Peg 1 missed his first target out, a whisper shot around the crowd, as they could not believe their eyes. Bang, bang, another target missed! Jack Thompson was holding it together well but dropped 2 points by the end of the line. Steve Fiddler dropped 3 points but the man from nowhere Dan Jubb was going like a train until he missed 3 out of his last 5 targets, all in all what does this leave us with.
J Stafford shot 23 and with 1 handicap point he finished on 24
Jack Thompson shot 22 and with 2 handicap points finished on 24
Steve Fiddler shot 22 and with 3 handicap points finished on 25
Dan Jubb shot 20 and with 4 handicap points finished on 24
Steve Fiddler won the shoot off with a score of 22+3 total 25
